Menards - Manager Review
7 comments
My 81 year old mother bought a lawn mower. She was unable to start the mower needing more strength to do so.
She attempted to return it to the Lancaster store and a manager named Mike told her you need to push it at the same time as you pull the cord to start it. Because Mike was able to start it. Mike then loaded the mower back in her car and sent her on her way.
What happened to customer service and seeing to it that the customer is satisfied? I wonder how Mike would feel if his 81 year old mother was treated like that?
Reason of review: Poor customer service.

1. you should mow her lawn for her.
2.
she should hire a service
3. buy a mower with electric start.
none of this is Menards fault.
Just look at the signs posted around the mowers. They are pretty clear that once you've put gas in a mower it isn't returnable. Menards can't send it back to the manufacturer and shouldn't be expected to take a loss on selling the mower as a used mower.
Doesn't anybody realize, when these machines are made, no matter the manufacturer, they test them and have placed gas and oil in them already to check that they operate. The gas and oil is then drained out before they are packaged and shipped.
So really, the customer (or should I use Menards word, Guest,) is not the first to put these in the machines. Not saying that Menards should take them back but in some cases it is clear that the machine is defective. The "fix it shops" that work with these Menards items take forever to get to your new machine and you are left without for weeks. It just comes down to buy better quality and research products and the stores better before buying.
If it's cheap it's probably going to break sooner rather than later.
Be a educated shopper, not a cheap shopper. Remember, the cheap comes out expensive.
Just want to add to the comment I posted yesterday. I feel in this case, she was able to demonstrate she could not start it.
Morally I would think to take it back and help her find something she can use would benefit everyone.
Yes I see the comments asking why a 81 year old is mowing her own lawn. What you are missing is if an older person is still able to be active it helps keep them going. How would you feel if you were told not to do something?
Just sit there. What reason for living would you have? I have parents who are getting up there and have health issues. They need to keep moving and doing things.
With the snowy winter months behind us, I have seen a real change in their attitudes. Being in the house and not able to get out had them feeling "blue" now that it's getting nicer they are in a much happier if I dare say spunky. They know I will be there in 2 shakes of a lambs tail if they need help. I also know I have to let them try to do things for themselves too.
Remember when you were a kid and people had to do things for you that you wanted to be able to do on your own?
She needs a sense of purpose and independence and I say if she is fit enough why not let her. I'm sure she has been mowing longer than any of us.
Why is your 81 yr. old mother mowing a lawn in the first place. You should be doing it for her.
It has nothing to do with that. The reason this policy is in place is because Menards employees are not qualified to diagnose if it's a consumer caused issue or a defect in the machine.
Far to many machines end up returned because the consumer is ignorant on how to operate it and destroys the machine. Other will use Menards as a free rental shop. This is a recommendation for Menards by manufactures. This policy is not exclusive to Menards other big box stores have similar policies.
What 81 year old women is mowing her lawn anyways?? Her children have the time to find a special forum on the internet to complain for her, but not the time to mow their mothers lawn? Get real.... If you want better service be a better consumer!
When making it a major purchase it's very important you learn the return policies of the establishment you're doing business at!
Bad consumers just buy. Good consumers educate themselves first.
Why aren't you mowing your 81 year old mother's lawn so she doesn't have to do it?
