I'm a 70 year old retired senior. I had a successful and rewarding career with a company for over 40 years. After retiring, I decided to find some part time work to keep me busy.

I started working for Menard's in 2010, about a year after my retirement after driving by and seeing a large "We're hiring" sign hanging on the front of the building. I walked in and filled out an application and was surprised that I got a phone call the very next day asking me to come in. I came in and was hired immediately.

I was an excellent employee. I came to work everyday on time and was good at my job. I never once had a complaint from any customer or manager in the eight I worked there.

UnfortunateIy I was witness to a lot of verbal abuse and threatening behavior from ALL the General managers. Our store had three. The GM's were bullies and talked downed to employees and constantly made threats to them. People worked in an atmosphere of fear and hostility. You didn't dare question a GM. If you did, you might find yourself out of a job. It happened regularly. Employees were fired or quit at an alarming rate. I had heard that our employee turnover rate exceeded 70%. I hated seeing people being treated that way, but I couldn't do anything to help.

After eight years of service, one of the Gm's decided that I needed to go. After coming back from vacation I was told that I had been replaced by a new employee. I was not given a GOOD reason for their decision. After eight years, I was at the top of my wage scale, which was about the starting wage at Lowes and Home Depot, but I didn't think that could be the reason. The new job they gave me was beyond my physical capabilities. I was injured the first week and was unable to work for a while.

When I returned to work again, they began harassing me and making my life miserable. They were telling lies and making false accusations about things I never did. When they started doing this in front of customers and fellow employees, I thought I should leave and told them I was going to retire, which is what I did.

By the way....that hiring sign hanging on the front of the store is a permanent fixture. It's never taken down. They are ALWAYS in need of help. Go figure!

You don't say what position you were working in and what the reason they gave you for changing your position. Having spent a fair amount of time at Menards I've seen a lot of tough managers and those who let a lot slide.

Once had a manager who felt bad if he couldn't fire at least 2 people every week. To be fair, there are reasons to move someone out of a position. If your availability didn't match the customer demand for scheduling they may move you to a position that meets the hours you are willing to work and move someone in who can work the schedule the position demands. We also have to face the fact that as we age we often tend to slow down.

At 60 I can't do many of the things I did when I was 20 or may be much slower at getting things done.

In some of their smaller departments (only 4 employees) the may need to have employees that can work faster than a department with 20 employees. It may sound bad, but it may make good business sense to move the faster employees to the smaller departments and have a broader mix of employees in the larger departments.
