I purchased an earth quake gas tiller. When he used it the first time he found it to be far too loud and not powerful and very hard to start.

When we brought the tiller back to the store in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, I was told by the return desk attendant that because gas had been put into the machine it could not be returned. I explained that there was no way to know how the machine works without having done so and that this had been explained in detail to the return agent. The staffs behind the counter making us feel like we were being seen as criminals, as a 50 years old professor, this is the first time in my life I been in a such situation. I took the machine threw it in the trash and bought a new one from Wal-Mart.

I will never shop in a Menards again!!!

I am going to switch to Home Depot from now on. Save yourself from terrible customer service and shop elsewhere!

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $200.

Menards Cons: Refund policy, Poor customer service, Rude manager at menards.

If these Menard rejects spent more time working and less time scolding the public, just maybe this all knowing shark nasty might advance from lumber stacker to trash collector, I have heard that is a whole $.03 per hour raise. SHOP at LOWES or HOME DOPOT, Menards treats customers WRONG!


Sorry you were menarded. I am 100% with you on this, Menards is wrong and I couldn't care less about their policy.

if they continue to sell Chinese made, trashy,gas powered equipment they will one day reap what they sew. I applaud your changing home improvement stores, Lowes or Home Depot will not treat their customers this way. By the way did you notice most of the staff and employees have a very low IQ?

You have no clue what you are talking about. Menards doesnt force people to buy low quality goods.

People want cheap by cheap, but then expect a top line product. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. If you were selling something you have a right to protect yourself from the ignorant. I can assure you if you got tired of people returning stuff left and right because they had no clue how to maintain it or use it you would start to enforce such a policy.

Not to mention what's stopping some fool from using a mower and returning it every time he is done cutting his lawn......... Menards has every right to protect themselves from people trying to take advantage of them. Same goes for the manufacture. Home Depot and Lowes have very similar complaints on here you should wake up and smell the coffee.

No big box store is any better or worst. The only difference is the products and pricing. Professionals do the crafts. They don't work for 8-14 bucks an hour when they could be making 20+ in the field.

It's obvious you've never spent any real time working in a store like Menards. I highly suggest you try it out and see how you like getting spit on each and every day by the people who shop there. See how much you care about them after 3-months.

Even when you treat them well they treat you like you are nothing. Some even get off on trying to get you fired based on their ignorance.


This return policy is posted by the tillers, on your receipt, on Menards website and in big bold words by the return desk. Once gas is put into the machine it cannot be returned, it must go to a repair shop.

If the issue is covered under manufacture warranty you will not be charged. This return policy is to protect Menards and the manufacture from clueless people who destroy their equipment because they are to lazy to read an owners manual. It's also to prevent people from using it for their 1-time project and not paying a dime for it. It's just like a car soon as you drive it off the lot it's lost a good portion of it's value.

If you're as educated as you claim to be you would have educated yourself on the return policy before making such a large purchase. Smart consumers take the time to fully understand stores return policies before they make a major purchase. The only person you should be angry with is yourself. You'd protect your own interest, don't be entitled and make the assumption Menards should just bend over for you.

If Menards didn't have this policy they would be losing tons of money. Finally Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart have very similar standards on returning gas powered equipment.

So by all means go and shop there. You will find out soon enough they're no better.


There is another reason for not accepting returns of gas powered equipment is safety, fire codes don't allow the stores to have gasoline inside the store.


The policy is clearly posted around gas powered equipment. What do you expect a store to do with used equipment?

Why should they take a loss because you decided you want something else? Put an ad on Craigs list and sell it if you want something different. You need to do your research before you buy a product. Read reviews on other users results with the equipment.

Gas powered products can be loud. Wear hearing protection if you feel it is too loud.
