Was looking for flooring and some ideas for a new type of room. Couldn't find anyone on a Friday.

I know it's mothers day weekend but still at noon should have some one there. Looked for about 20 min. Didn't see the name on the screen and the one person who I stopped said not my department. One of the customers was walking out from the hardware area and he asked if he could help.

He did. It was a good chat. He told me of a few ideas of floor and how it should be. Said laminate or vynl would be best for where I wanted.

Told me to look online if couldn't get help. Answers were there and then they would have it ready for pick up if I liked it and ordered it. He was more help and heard from someone as he was leaving that it was sad he not there anymore. That person answered my questions and had a knowledge that is hard to find anymore.

No wonder.

I won't be shopping there anymore. I hope to find that man and I'll put him to work for me

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $6000.

Preferred solution: find that man and get him back.

Big box stores aren't over staffed to start with but you will find even less help if you shop at meal time. The one person left in the department at lunch time may have been cutting blinds (yes, Menards sells blinds in the flooring department) or helping another customer get flooring they had ordered from the special order area in the back. The employee you did talk to should have paged someone for you.

Dear Anonymous,

Have you ever tried to find someone in the Menards stores? The only place you will see people is behind the returns desk when walking in and the Paint department.

If you are in any other area/aisle good luck. Also why are they all on their meal break together? They should be staggered to provide coverage.

I have had several experiences when they ignore you completely.

Yes there are other tasks to do in the store, but as a former general office employee, I know the motto, Take the Money. Kind of hard to Take the Money when customers (Guests as they are called in the Menards circle of things) can not find what they are looking for and leave empty handed.

If you worked at the G.O. you should know how much they are cutting payroll in the stores.

Things were a lot better before Charlie came along and the bottom line got more important than taking care of "Guests". Stores would be a lot better off thinking of people coming into their stores to make purchases as "CUSTOMERS". Have you ever expected a "guest" to come into your home to buy something? Customers are someone that goes into a store intending to make a purchase provided there is someone there to make the sale.

Menards is great at cutting payroll and fining managers that spend more than they are allowed. They still expect all the plan-o-grams to be completed on time and the shelves to be faced and clean with no excuses. What gets hurt is the service people expect when they come in to shop. Take the money was big when Larry was around but now it's all about doing more with less.

Unfortunately that is the direction the industry is taking. Just look at the complaints about Lowes and Home Depot as well.

Usually only 1 person in a department in on break at a time. If there are only 2 people working in a department there is only 1 left.

And yes it might be hard to find that one person out in the department. They are'n supposed to stand around the desk. They are either out looking for people to help or working on the list of things to do that management wants done during their shift. It's a little hard to take everyone's money when you are the only person in the department.

Face it, Menards and most big box stores are set up to be pretty much self service. People have the choice of shopping at a self service store and saving money or going to a smaller fully staffed full service store and paying a little more to cover the wages of the extra help.
