I placed an order online on 10-12-2016 and it was promptly shipped out the same day. In route to being delivered the item was damaged and returned to Menards distribution center. The shipping company ( FED X ) or Menards did not bother to call and let me know the status of the order. It wasn't until I called and inquired about the order that I found out that it was damaged and returned. I made several attempts to call the company but always got a phone recording. It is now the 24th of October and I still don't know if a new order has been processed or what. Today I called and tried to contact a real person and again got a phone recording. This will be the last time I use the on-line order system at Menards. I could have gone to Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, Harbor Freight or Northern tool but I chose Menards. Sorry for you... You lost this customer...

BAD POLICY

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

i made an itemized list of materials for a 40 foot barn to be constructed.it is the second one to be built this summer that we have purchased materials from you.I went to the avon store on Saturday and there were 3 employees there ,I asked a man named brandon to price out my list so i could see about ordering it.I told him he could email it to me or i would return after he was done with it.he said we dont email and refused to price the materials unless i stood there and read it off to him line by line. I am in my mid seventies and have a bad knee and didnt feel like standing plus i had some shopping to finish.he said he couldnt tie up his computer and that if another client shoud come up he would have to stop and wait on them.I asked him if he only had one computer and he didnt answer me.after standing there 15 minutes and he was only half way thru my list I became exasperated and told him i guess you dont want my business.he seemed to just want to argue with me.i ran my own furniture store for 20 years in brownsburg and trained my personel that serving the public is what pays our bills, and to never stop waiting on one client to wait on another and we showed appreciation for all of those who supported our store.this man needs retraining or perhaps he just has no respect for a woman i can see no justification for his lack of professionalism and his arrogance

Is this a serious post? Is that fair of you to expect him to tell other costumers to wait because he has to price your stuff, and you're not even there??

For God's sake, use the internet. Have you heard of it? Menards.com. You can price your order, pay for it, and have them pull it for you so it's ready when you come in for it!

Seriously lady, have some respect for the workers AND customers around you. Your complaint is unbelievable.

Was it a joke or are you serious? Just...wow.

This person has a legitimate complaint. The estimate should have been turned over to the store's estimator as she didn't need it immediately, and yes Menards can e-mail an estimate.

Had this complaint been sent to the corporate office rather than being posted on a complaint site that has nothing to do with Menards Brandon would have been dealt with in an appropriate manner. He either lacks training or has an attitude that needs to be corrected.

Hey look guys one of their corporate employees actually answered a post ^. Sorry but it's obvious you sit behind a desk sir and don't get screamed at because "no one cares about customer service enough to help me", because it is clearly unfathomable for an employee to be helping someone they can't currently see at the moment.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1211863

No, there are just some of us that work in the stores that do care about taking care of the customers. Yes there are those abusive customers but it is obvious that this poster wasn't screaming at Brandon to get the estimate done.

She is the kind of customer you like to help because they are letting you do the estimate without rushing and allowing you to help other customers looking for immediate assistance. You will also note that I use the term customer and not "guest" as corporate would like. I treat people as customers. Customers come into the store to buy a product.

I feel it is my job to help them find the best product for their project.

That doesn't mean the most expensive item i can sell them, it is the item that will give the customer the results they want in a cost effective manner. If I were allowed to treat people coming into the store as a "guest" I should be allowed to offer refreshments and perhaps a place to sit and relax while they wait for service as they make their way through bigger and bigger stores.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1211856

I believe the previous commenter was referring to the fact that most people do not understand that it is possible to be assisting someone else while they are not directly standing next to them, as the employee was trying to stop getting screamed at by someone else before it happens. As well as pointing out that this is a foresight that only people who have worked on a 'sales floor' before would be able to foresee. I could be wrong but that's what I gathered.

Disabled veteran

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My father who is a disabled veteran, who worked 20 years as a prison gaurd, who contributed his whole life to his country, and his family. The first brand new lawnmower he ever has bought, blows a seal after 2 and a half hrs.

than told he cant exchange it because he put gas in it. When it is not posted anywhere in the store besides the customer return policy and the reciept where no one looks at this until you return things.

I am a construction man. major at NMU and someday will have the chance to deny Menards my bosse's or my companies money, there is a store across the highway, that took my chainsaw back no questions asked for a full refund, called Lowe's.

It's not relevant that your farther is a disabled veteran or a former prison guard. My grandpa is a disabled veteran and lives in the YOOP AS well.

My uncle died in the Vietnam war and I would never use it as leverage to make an argument online besides this one of course BECAUSE IT'S ABSOLUTELY INSANE YOU USE IT TO TRY AND GAIN SYMPATHY. Now on to the real issue! It's posted by the lawn mowers once gas is put into the unit if there is an issue it will need to go a repair shop and cannot be returned to the store. If it's not a consumer caused issue the manufacturer will cover it under warranty FREE OF CHARGE.

This policy is in place to protect Menards from ignorant people who fail to use and maintain the machine properly. Lots of people don't know to add oil! Lots of people don't know to use ethanol free gas or an additive to off set it. Lots of people don't read the receipt like you said and the owner manual [THEY SHOULD ALWAYS]!

It's also to prevent them from being a free rental shop where even thing is used and returned when no longer needed. Menards employees are not capable of diagnosing if it's a consumer caused issue or a defect in the machine, this is why MANUFACTURERS HAVE RECOMMEND THAT MENARDS use a repair shop to determine the cause. Wal-Mart has a similar policy.

Want a better place to shop it's simple BE A BETTER CONSUMER. Lowes is no better they have 2711 complaints on here that's 1200 more than Menards.

Guest

What does being a disabled vet or what a person does for a living have to do with the way warranties on a product are handled? Are you saying he was being discriminated against because he was a vet or a prison guard?

Guest

So your logic is that it's on the receipt, but nobody reads the receipt. So if your father isn't bright enough to read the receipt or otherwise figure out what he's agreeing to, why would we assume he's bright enough to read any other sign posted about it?

Guest

Why would a retailer hold themselves liable? Construction is right no business in that brain of yours.

Who made that lawnmower? Who provides the warranty for that lawnmower? When your future construction company finishes a house are you going to warrant the electrical? The plumbing?

No you aren't.

And I guarantee he was offered extended warranty with Menards after the manufacturers warranty was up but he didn't wanna pay for that. The manufacturers warranty provides that you take it to a service center because high school teenagers are not licensed to repair gas powered equipment.

Guest

Here we go again. Check the area where lawn mowers are sold.

They post signs saying power equipment needs to go to a service center rather than being returned to the store.

The manufacturer warranty (take time to read it) calls for repair in the case of a defect, not replacement. Your complaint, if you feel it it justified should be with the manufacturer rather than the retailer as it is the manufacturer that provides the warranty.

Beware! Do not honor advertised price!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

As a dedicated Menards customer, I a very upset with my experience at the location in Howard on 8/23/16. I was interested in purchasing a mattress from this store.

I went up to the front end counter and spoke with Tara. I wanted to confirm the price was correct on the mattress. It had a green sale sticker stating the price was $99.00. I thought this was an amazing deal, considering the rest of the mattresses around it said $800-$1000.

I took a picture of the sticker, and showed it to Tara. She then she said she would be right back (my assumption was she was going to look at the sticker. She back and informed me that the price was not $99.00 but $899.00. She said she could not honor the price, because if she did she would be fired.

She explained that this was a mistake made by the corporate office.

I expect this to be honored, since this is the price represented in your store. I have a picture of the item.

I highly doubt that Mr. Shark is a lawyer, and I'm sure he also has no qualifications to speak about the laws in other states. Aren't you late for your shift at Menards?

Guest

In some states it is the state law, that the store MUST honor the marked price. Don't worry though, you will get comments from a bunch of clueless slags, who either work for Menards, or don't know anything about law. :)

MrSharkNasty
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1221499

Well first of all in the state of Wisconsin they have no such law. Such a huge difference in price no state in this world would up hold a 800 dollar difference in pricing.

Scammers would be running rampant trying to take advantage of this loophole. It takes very little effort to change signage/tagging of a product around. An ethical consumer wouldn't make a fuss about this! It's basically stealing if you try and take advantage of of this error.

If Menards handed you 800 dollars extra in cash would you come on the internet and complain about? I highly doubt it.

An honest person would be like you made an error here is your money back. This person would have clearly kept the money and ran.

Guest

All stores have the right to correct pricing errors and receive the proper price for a product. I wonder, if a person who is obviously as perfect as you are would have insisted on paying $899 for the mattress if it rang up at the register for $99 if the tag had said $899. Bet you would have been telling everyone you knew that you screwed Menards out of $800.00.

Guest

You thought the price was wrong, which is why you checked on it. You knew it was too good to be true, then get upset that you were right.

And you say it was a price tag, not a print flyer, so it wasn't "advertised". Mistakes happen, but expecting an $800 mattress for $100 is not reasonable.

My experiences with Menards

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Interesting reading all the problems people have. I myself have had only good experiences at Menards.

Over the years I have purchased 2 dishwashers, 2 washers, 2 dryers, 1 12x20 storage shed kit, shingles and countless purchases of various lumber. I live 50 miles from the closest Menards and yes shipping shingles or the storage shed kit can be expensive but still cheaper than renting a U Haul truck. I usually try to time large purchases with the 11% rebate week. I have always received any rebate that I sent in, though I will admit that I am careful to send a large ($300 range) rebate request by certified mail.

Who cares if a rebate can only be used there, I can spend that and more there easily enough.

I have dealt with Menards stores in Ankeny, IA, Waterloo,IA, and Mason City, IA and I have found the employees friendly and helpful.

You nailed it on the head poster. Menards is a great place to shop as long as you are willing to do a little research ahead of time and at least have an idea of what you need.

It is important to understand that Menards employees are not experts, they are college students or people working a second part time job. They generally do the best they can and are helpful and friendly unless customers are jerks to them which I see way too often.

In m opinion Menards is really geared toward small contractors like myself, farmers, and the small percentage of do-it-yourselfers who really know what they are doing.

If you don't fit into these categories, a smaller local lumberyard/hardware store might fit your needs better.

Unfair pricing...

Went to buy a couple of Christmas mats for our outer hall. They were priced at $3.88 each.

While in Menards I noticed some autumn/Thanksgiving mats mixed in with the Christmas mats, same size, same manufacturer (Mohawk Homes) and same material and decided to get one of them, too. While being checked out, I noticed that the autumn design mat rang up at $6.88. Questioned the cashier who wasn't sure why, but she did check and told me the autumn design mats were priced $3.00 more. She said that was because they were autumn mats and only the Christmas ones were $3.88.

What a ridiculous reason. It is going to be Thanksgiving in a matter of days and if anything the autumn mats should have been marked lower just to try to get rid of them. What a way to try to cheat your customer.

So I didn't buy the autumn one. I do pay attention to prices.

Disabled and Ditched

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Menard's store employees are nice people at our Manchester, MO store, but the Customer Service people are awful to disabled customers. The "policy" for a long time was to have only one assistance cart in the store; now there are two, but it's a huge store serving a huge population and it's rarely possible to get one.

If you ask at the CS desk for any assistance -- like, could someone get me something within the store and let me pay for it here so I don't have to limp the store with my walker, it's no way! Today, for two products stored NEXT to the CS counter, total less than $20, I was told I'd have to get in line like every other customer. Two employees, no other customer at the counter, product right there!

No. I'm 73, white-haired, and leaning on a walker on one leg.

Regarding the motorized carts...

According to the ADA, any business has to be handicapped accessible, but their being handicapped accessible does not equal providing motorized carts. As long as the handicapped customer is able to enter the place of business, then that business is ADA compliant.

Motorized carts are provided as a courtesy.

The ADA does not require any business to provide motorized carts.

The best thing any handicapped person can do is to talk to their doctor or healthcare provider regarding their getting a motorized cart.

MrSharkNasty

My grandpa is 90 years old and walks to the grocery store and back totaling 3 miles, he does this a couple times a week. If you need a motorized cart that badly purchase one for yourself.

I have no respect for people who go poor me and do nothing about it.

Start exercising, improve your ability. Being disabled is a state of mind nothing more.

Two things you undereducated mouthbreathers should understand. Number one: Your bank is the hold up and not the business!

Your money is released the very moment your return is processed. Itโ€™s your banks foolish policies that makes your money late to get to your account. Number two: DEBIT IS NOT THE SAME AS CASH!!!!!! That was a sales slogan to get you to use your card MORE and cash LESS!

There is no law in effect that states that your debit card is the exact same as cash. Thatโ€™s because it is NOT!! When you make a purchase and do a return, your return will ALWAYS be in the form of which you paid. Some stores offer you cash back instead of on your card.

But that is at the individual stores DISCRETION!! Itโ€™s NOT A LAW!! Showing your rather large bottoms will NOT change this. You people have gotten so lazy and stu*id!

Itโ€™s a shame that you have all turned into the nice little consumer robots that your government has been grooming you for. Never use common sense, never use your brain, never take responsibility.

Yup!! Youโ€™re just like your governments.

Guest

I made a purchase and used my debit as a credit card. I returned most items 2 days later on a Saturday and it was put back on my card.

Here it is a Monday and my refund is still not showing up in my account.

Shouldn't my refund be there by now? All my other returns is immediately!

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1662140

Ask your bank why you don't see it in your account.

Guest

You are a liar. If YOU used your debit card as a "debit" at the time of the purchase, the only option would be for the return to go back on your card as a "debit" OR cash back. If YOU used your card as a "credit" (which YOU did) at the time of the purchase, the only option for the return would be back as credit to your card.

Guest

If you paid as debit you can't get cash back. What if they give you cash and you have no money in your account...

then they are out of money because you wanted cash!

It's pretty simple... pay with cash if you want cash back lol.

Guest

Debit is not the same as cash. The store gets charged a % of your purchase.

If you return an item, the store gets refunded as well.

That's why many businesses have minimum purchase amounts for debit cards. Pay with cash or bug your bank.

Guest

Then complain to your bank regarding the delay in getting the money credited to your account.

Menards has no control over this.

Guest

Returns are refunded in the same manner as you paid for the product. If you paid in cash (dollar bills) you will get cash back.

If you use a debit card the refund will go back on the debit card and if you use a credit card the refund will go back to the credit card. Purchases with a store credit or gift card will be refunded as a store credit. Your transaction is processed to the store when you make the return, it's the banks that have a delay in crediting your account.

In the future if you want refunds paid in cash, pay with cash. Most stores have this policy, not just Menards.

Poor Customer Service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Recently purchase 100 6 X 9 paving blocks and 6 bags of sand. Prior to purchase we asked if we could have them put on a pallet.

We asked this of three different people; a man in the yard, the man who made the ticket and the man at the gate where we picked up the blocks.

We were told yes by everyone, all we needed to do was ask the person who loaded our truck. However the person who loaded the truck told us NO he would not do that and proceeded to load each block one at a time.

The yard tm can refuse to load an entire pallet if they are concerned about damaging your vehicle, or anything, really, with power equipment. At this point you would need to get a manager involved where they would personally do it instead or have you sign a waiver for the tm. I ran into this a couple times as yard manager when I worked there; unfortunately HR doing all the hiring doesn't exactly send some of the best apples your way for employees directly involved in customer interaction...Best thing you can do is just get one of them (yard manager) directly involved if you get one of these ornery SOBs.

Guest

Rule number one when I was trained in a lumber yard way back in 1984......never, NEVER load a full pallet of any type of cement or stone block directly into a pick-up truck! They can be EXTREMELY heavy and can very easily damage a light duty pick-up.

And by light duty I mean the industry term which includes all pick-up trucks! Not a smart idea.

Guest

Were you looking for the block to be placed on a pallet in your truck or did you want a pallet of block loaded in your truck? There is a difference.

Most people have no idea of how much block weighs and the reaction of their truck to a pallet being placed in the truck with a forklift. Often the truck will will bounce up and back as the forklift pulls out of the pallet. This causes the tailgate to hit the forklift and the customer expecting "compensation" for the damage.

The Yard person was smart and loaded them by hand to prevent damage to your vehicle. Go through the posts on this site over the years and you will see the complaints from people who have had their vehicles damaged.

really? shutting a door too hard does not hurt your vehicle.

MrSharkNasty

Guards working the gate are contracted from a company, Menards has no liability for anything they do. On another note it's amusing when people complain about people not loading something, but then they will complain if something is damaged when it is loaded.

Here is my tip DON'T ALLOW OTHERS TO TOUCH YOUR VEHICLE EVER, this is the only way to solve such a problem. You should have opened and closed it, very simple.

Guest

You don't say he damaged your vehicle, just shut the tailgate harder than you would have. The force required to shut the gate varies from vehicle to vehicle.

He just wanted to make sure it was shut tight.

My guess is you would have been here complaining if he shut it too softly and it didn't latch tight as well. If you are so picky as to how your vehicle is handled I agree with the previous poster...get out of your vehicle and shut it yourself.

Guest

Did he damaget your vehicle in some way? And if not, but areally concerned about the way people close your trunk.

Maybe you should get out of the vehicle and do it yourself. Many trunks, tailgates, and hatchea require alot of force to close properly.

I LOVE shopping at Menards

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Menards has a large inventory and I have only had good experiences and lots of good help from their friendly employees in Watertown, SD. This webside requests "at least' 100 words. Well, that is a lot of words! Another thing that is nice about Menards is that both my husband and I don't mind going there to shop. They are open early in the morning and on weekends so when we have a project and need to get something in order to complete the project - we can run to Menards and get the parts that we need. I have found that many of their employees are helpful - both in finding the things we are looking for and with helpful suggestions. I certainly hope there are 100 words here.

Can't get my refund.... Can't get anyone to contact me !!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

On March 21.2015, I special-ordered a Bath vanity and trim pieces for a total of $500.53. I was NOT notified when the merchandise came in.

When I checked several months later, I was told that the merchandise was sold. I ask for a refund and was told that there would be a 25% fee. That's about $125.00 on a $500.00 purchase. PLUS, Menard's had sold the pieces and made their profit on the sale.

Despite NUMEROUS emails (since there is not a phone number for customer service), I have not received my refund. Judging by the wording, I would say that my emails were apparently answered by a computer program and now are not answered at all.

I hope someone from Menard's monitors this site, because, if no one contacts me, I will report Menard's to the Ohio Atty Gen, Ohio BBB, social media sites, and my local TV consumer protection reporters. I consider this theft of my $500.53.

You were notified by email like the policy has been since 2010! After a certain amount of time Menards will call you, they generate a list of items that are no picked up because Menards does not have the room to be storing peoples stuff!

You received at least one phone call, I am certain of this! If you're expecting an item and it passes the estimated delivery date you SHOULD ALWAYS CONTACT the seller. Eventually if you have not made contact and have ignored the contact by Menards technically the item is abandoned and Menards can do what they wish the with item. Restocking fees are to cover shipping and handling cost as well as storing cost.

They clearly had the item sitting around for a very long time taking unwanted space. Next time be a better consumer and take the initiative to pick up your stuff in a timely manner.

Guest

Take a look at your order. It spells out the restocking fee if the merchandise is not picked up.

If you didn't provide an e-mail to be notified at you were responsible to check its arrival.

The 25% they charge offsets the loss they take selling the product in the bargain area. Why on earth would you order a product and not bother checking on it for months after it was due?

Supose to b two people working that area. The one guy was tied up with like 3 customers and the other guy was in electrical doing some work on the building itself instead of helping customers.

What's up with that? Apparently the GM had told this guy to go lay some carpet instead of help the customers I don't know *** poor management I think.

It's hard to believe what you say. In your first sentence you say no one was around and in your second sentence you say there was someone with "like" 3 customers.

You're just mad he wasn't helping you. Yes, their employees do other things in the store besides selling. The people that sell the carpet are also the ones that know the most about installing it and will be called upon to help install carpet in the store. As in most projects there are points that you can't just walk away without something being ruined.

Having their employees do some of the work in the store helps keep their cost of doing business and helps keep your prices low. Chill out, wait a few minutes and you'll get taken care of.
